Powys did not fall; instead it fought with all of its heart and soul and defeated the British king. Cynan sent couriers to Birmingham to find Stephen, but to no avail. He and his wife decided not to tell Lew anything about the war or Stephen. Instead, they brought him up as an only child and a future king. Lew learned the ways of a king, but deep in his heart was a thirst for battle, to become a warrior. His parents could not deny him his passion, for after his lessons, he would practice his fighting skills by hitting the gargoyles with but a stick. It was at the age of 9 that his parents gave in to him and sent him to Ynys Ski, warrior school for boys, in Northern Scotland on the condition that he would take the thrown at the proper time and use his skills for the good of the country.
As he was walking along the road, he found the remains of a human body. "Goewyn" He whispered… He cradled her broken body. Her skirt was still pulled up from when she had been raped. He covered her then, looking at the milky white face, covered in blood. A deep cut ran the length of her neck and along the middle of her stomach. The umbilacle cord was hanging from her stomach, his unborn son at the end. Lew carried the bodies back to Powys castle, ignoring the stares this brought. He buried her beneath the gardens she loved so much. Army returned with a note. He said he went to thieves row and found
Lew's name written in blood on the wall, the note stuck in the wall with a dagger.
The note was in Goewyn's handwriting, begging his forgiveness. She had been lonely while he was gone and was wooed by Paladyr. She did not cheat on him, she resisted and they killed her for it. She only wanted to be close to another man and did not know how he could forgive her, but wished that he would. Lew crumpled the note, gave up his position and title as Paladin and went on a one man crusade to avenge Goewyn's death. For two years, he hunted Paladyr. Finally killing him. Paladyr's death did not cause the satisfaction he once thought and cursed himself for giving into temptation and breaking his vow. He spent over a year and a half in the woods, befriended by a woodsman named Turin. Finally, he returned to Powys Castle in hopes that he could reclaim some of his life.
The place had been over grown and it took months to clear. When it was repaired from the battles, Lew returned to Rivendell to search for a new life.
