Myrantha

Myrantha

Myrantha was born, one of triplet females, in a small village at the edge of a great forest. Her mother, who was half Wood Nymph and half human, fell in love with a great Titan. From this love was spawned the three sisters, Myrantha, Morrigu, and Miacha. One day, when the girls were still very young, a band of evil trolls raided the village, taking the smallest of the sisters, Miacha, captive. The girls mother was devastated, and spent weeks searching the forest for the girl. Finally, when all hope of rescue was gone, she returned to caring for the remaining two. Several years later, when the two girls had grown into young women, the village fell under attack once again, this time at the mercy of an enormous dragon. The beast, with an evil roar, set fire to the village, destroying the homes and devouring any and all villagers he could manage to catch. Myrantha was quick and ran to the forest, but her mother and sister were trapped in their hut and killed in the fire. Myrantha, insane with grief and loathing of the beast that had killed the remainder of her family, vowed revenge upon the dragon, and set off in pursuit. She wandered for months before, one day, stumbling into the lair of an old mage. Weak and tired, exhausted from the futility of her quest, she collapsed at the mouth of his cave. The old mage took her in, fed her and helped her regain her strength. After hearing her story, and seeing something within the young girl, the mage taught her the ways of magick, and gave her the ability to shapeshift at will, and communicate with animals. Then, with a pair of special daggers, he set her on her quest again, to find the evil dragon that destroyed part of her life. One day she came upon an injured raven, lying torn and dying from the attack of an animal, or hawk. She took this poor creature and nursed it, until he was well, and brought him back to good health. As he healed, he told her his name was Pwyll. Pwyll became very attached to Myrantha and vowed silently to follow her wherever she went. He soon learned that she was in search of the evil dragon, and her long lost sister. Together they set off across the countryside, searching for someone or something that would lead them to their goal.

One hot and muggy day, as Myrantha was resting in the foot hills of the mountains, several miles from where her village had once stood, she saw a shadow upon the ground. The shadow brought back horrid memories of fire, the smell of burning flesh, and the screams of the dying villagers. Glancing up into the sky she saw an enormous snow white beast, a great dragon. With a gasp and a cry to Pwyll, she took off in pursuit of the creature. She sprinted through the hills, changing into the form of a cougar, and leaping among the rocks. She followed the dragon, with Pwyll close overhead, until it came to a rest on a small peak overlooking the plains. Slowing her pursuit she changed back into human form, and bidding Pwyll to wait, moved silently towards the beast. Circling around until she was behind it, above the peak, she crept closer and closer. Then drawing both daggers from their sheaths, and shouting out in anger the names of her family and friends that died, she came down on the dragon with a fury. The dragon turned in surprise, opening his mighty jaws and spraying a stream of fire. Myrantha leapt to the side, avoiding the fire and plunging a dagger into the dragons side. With a roar the dragon pulled back and swept at the girl with his tail. With a spring into the air and a back flip she quickly changed into a hawk and flew into the sky, banking and coming down on the dragons horned head. The dragon spun his head around violently and the bird was flung to the ground. Stunned, she unconsciously changed back into human form as the dragon raised a great taloned foot, aiming to bring it down upon her body. She rolled to the side and rose again, rushing the dragon in relentless persistence. The dragon defended himself, but seemed reluctant to harm the human girl. This went on for quite a long time until the girl was nearly spent. Then, uttering an angry cry, she stood before the dragon and said "You have murdered my family and destroyed my village, you sulphorous bag of worthless offal. If I am to die I will at least take you with me." As she stood, exhausted but not willing to give up, the dragon spoke with a mighty voice.."I murdered your family? I have never killed except to defend myself. And I have never destroyed a village. I have no need to rampage against the helpless." Myrantha scoffed at this statement, only hearing what she thought were lies. She tried once more to rush the dragon with her dagger raised, but with a sweep of his massive foot he knocked her to the ground. Pinning her there he repeated his words and offered a bargain, in order to end the duel. If she would give up on her attack he would help her to find the true killer of her family, and avenge their deaths. In return she would be a companion to him, offering him some relief from the life of loneliness he had lived since the loss of his clan. He was, he explained, the last of the Clan of Immortal White Dragons. Realizing that this may be the truth, since she couldn't remember the other dragon being white, and sensing something in the way the dragon spoke to her, she grudgingly relented. Since that time, the three unlikely companions, the girl, the dragon and the raven, have traveled together. Myrantha came to believe the dragons story, and soon became fond of him. He told her of his long life and showed her his many forms, including human. They shared many adventures, and soon Myrantha found herself growing closer to him. In time the dragon and Myrantha fell deeply in love. Though their differences were many, they shared a passion for fighting evil and preserving the freedom of those that were innocent. They met many friends and shared any adventures. Then one day the Dragon began to go away for days at a time. He would spend more and more time in the forest, but Myrantha's love only grew stronger. Then one day he confessed to her that he had hatchlings from another mate, newly hatched and needing the care of a father. He never mentioned what became of the mother or if she was still alive. She was devastated and begged him to take her with him. Then one day she saw him leave, never to return to her. She spent many months awaiting his return before she finally gave up and moved on.
