This is the personal area for each user of the NUchat software. This page will give you the means to configure your the image that you present to the world.

This pages gives access to your:

  • Handle
  • Default Conference
  • Home Page URL
  • Icon URL
  • Auto Refresh Rate
  • Subscriber Password
Also available on this page is the selection of blocking methods as well as control over who is in the list of users that blocking will affect.

Handle

The handle is the main way that other users have to identify you. Handles are used in the Posting Header so that people can keep track of who said what.

Handles should be chosen carefully and attempts should be make to make them as unique as possible to avoid being mistaken for someone else. A secondary means of establishing individuality is by the use of the Icon URL.

Default Conference

Although seldom used, this helps to put your into a room when the system cannot identify one for you. An example of its use can be seen if you create a bookmark such as

http://chat.acmeweb.com/nuchat/cgi/nuchat.cgi/Sam

where Sam is the Subscriber ID. With this link you can change your Default Conference and the same link with take you to the conference specified here.

Home Page URL

The Home Page URL is used in the Posting Header as well as for the user's icon (designated by the Icon URL). This can be set to a page in the ICS Registry, a mailto URL to allow other users to easily send email to you, or nothing at all.

An example of an http URL might be:

http://www.nowhere.net/people/sam.html

and an example of a mailto URL might be:

mailto:sam@nowhere.net

Icon URL

The Icon URL is used to characterize a subscriber to others on the system. Typically used present a personality, this image help to identify who the poster is more easily than the handle. Images give quick reference as to whom the posting belongs allowing users to skim the page looking for a specific response.

Image recommendations are:

  • Keep the images small for quick downloading
  • Keep them static. Animated images cause extra load on browsers.
  • Don't use copyrighted images without permission.
  • Get permission to link to an image that is on someone else's site first.

Auto Refresh Rate

The Auto Refresh Rate sets the number of seconds that the browser will wait before it auto updates the screen. The interval is between the start of the loads, not from the end of one until the start of the next.

This value is only used when Auto Refresh is enabled on the conference room page.

Subscriber Password

You can change your password at any time by entering a new password in the New password box. You will need to type it a second time in the Verify box to make sure that it typed in properly.

If you do not wish to change your password, leave both of these fields blank.
